INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

History of the Institute
The Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) is a pre-eminent public institution that provides both academic and professional business education in Ghana. With over forty (40) years of experience, the Institute has gained a reputation as the oldest Professional Accountancy and Management tuition provider in Ghana with many of its products in key leadership positions in Ghana and elsewhere.   The Institute was the first and still the only public institution in Ghana with the mandate to offer both academic Degrees and provide training for Business Professional education in Ghana.  The Institute currently has a student population of over seven thousand (7000) and staff strength of about 310.

The Institute was founded in1965 as a private Institution and  was taken over by government in 1978 by the Institute of Professional Studies Decree, 1978 (SMCD 200). The Institute has been offering tuition for various business professional programmes that are internationally recognized and acclaimed. In this respect, IPS has contributed immensely to the teaching and practice of Accountancy and Management in Ghana. The Institute was subsequently, established as a tertiary institution by  the Institute of Professional Studies Act, (Act 566), 1999 with a mandate to provide tertiary and professional education in the academic disciplines of Accountancy, Management  and other related areas of study.
Subsequently, the Institute introduced Bachelor Degree Programmes in the various mandated disciplines to meet the demands of industry and commerce in September 2005 and received a presidential charter in September 2008, conferring on it the status of a fully fledged public university. The Institute currently offers Undergraduate and Masters Degrees for several programmes.  The combination of scholarship and professionalism is the foundation of the Institute’s unique profile.
The development of the initial and new range of academic programmes, coupled with trends in tertiary education at both the local and international levels, calls for a review or amendment of the existing Act 566.   With the addition of the Weekend Programme, Publication of the Journal of Business Research (JBR) and Graduate Programmes, the Institute requires a new legal framework and additional resources and strategies to meet its future aspirations. The Institute has taken steps to propose the review of Act 566 of 1999 and the proposal has received cabinet ascent, waiting for a bill to be drafted for the consideration of Parliament.
With the background of the Institute as described above, it becomes clear that the Institute is in the process of building its systems and laying the foundation for a solid academic profile, quite different from the requirements of a purely professional or academic Institution.

The Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), since its establishment, has been committed to the training of Professional Accountants, Marketing Executives and Administrators. Within a short frame of time the Institute has become a national leader in this respect.

With the changing trends and complexities of industry and contemporary commerce, this Institute has taken the challenge to introduce Undergraduate and Graduate Degree programmes in Marketing, Accounting, Banking and Finance and Business Administration to augment the existing portfolio of professional courses (ICAG, ACCA, ICSA, CIM, CIMA) for which IPS has been a trail-blazer.

The Institute, over the last four years, has developed faster than was imagined in the annals of tertiary education in Ghana. It is anticipated that the degree programme will ensure a further rapid growth, thus widening the frontiers of fame and increasing the students population with a resultant growth in the infrastructure on campus.

IPS continues to attract dynamic scholars from all fileds of endeavour to galvanize our campus community of hardworking Adminstrators, Researchers and Lecturers.

Since its establishment, this modest but rapidly transforming Institute has assiduously embarked on a mission of achieving its vision, not only by uniquely positioning itself as a national asset through the facilitation of tuition in professional education, in areas of strategic and economic importance, but IPS also seeks to turn out yearly marketable employable graduates ready for the job market.
